This Blender video demonstrates how to make an animation of text that appears to be carved by chipping away a block of wood. Blender version 2.71 was used for this tutorial. This video shows many techniques that may be helpful to beginners and intermediate users.

***
IF YOUR BLOCK OF WOOD DOES NOT DISPLAY THE WOOD TEXTURE, then do the following:
Make sure the cube object is selected and then open the Modifiers tab. In the explode modifier, remove the check mark that’s next to Cut Edges. This change appears to be required for newer versions of Blender. Special thanks to YouTube user AFWSI for posting this solution in the comments section.

  1. Thanks so much those last hours i was so close to that delete my Blender 2.79 because I haven't found Surface, but now I know "First I Must Change Blender Render to Cycles Render" then you will find Surface in materia mod thank you again!

  2. I need a good helper! I done the complete animation letters but I'm not able to transfer on video files.I can see the strip on the video editing mode and I verify all parameters jpg, png . But I don,t look the photos on my strip reader!!! What's they miss?

  3. Awesome tutorial! Thank-you!!

I ended up using two images; one of rough steel, and one of finished steel. Then I used an image to make the floor very dark grey and reflective [had to add a bit of roughness as it was too reflective at first, and mess with lights and camera placing, etc.]. Looks WAY cool! My first Blender project. I learned so much!

    Thank-you, again!

  4. Mine breaks in huge parts, idk why? I set it to 20000 and still no difference, huge chunks fall out unlike your video shows how it shreds into tiny microscopic pieces. But overall excellent tutorial. Liked and subscribed.
