This Blender video demonstrates how to make an animation of text that appears to be carved by chipping away a block of wood. Blender version 2.71 was used for this tutorial. This video shows many techniques that may be helpful to beginners and intermediate users.
***
IF YOUR BLOCK OF WOOD DOES NOT DISPLAY THE WOOD TEXTURE, then do the following:
Make sure the cube object is selected and then open the Modifiers tab. In the explode modifier, remove the check mark that’s next to Cut Edges. This change appears to be required for newer versions of Blender. Special thanks to YouTube user AFWSI for posting this solution in the comments section.

your videos are really great for beginners like us, truly built my confidence, now I am sort of getting well acquainted with the daunting user interface. Keep the good work up!
very good job
Awesome tutorial! Thank-you!!
I ended up using two images; one of rough steel, and one of finished steel. Then I used an image to make the floor very dark grey and reflective [had to add a bit of roughness as it was too reflective at first, and mess with lights and camera placing, etc.]. Looks WAY cool! My first Blender project. I learned so much!
Thank-you, again!
Thanks again, your the best…
The best tutorial, very easy to follow. Thank you for actually showing everyone how to use Blender.

Its hard to watch, because of the monotone way it is told…

Great tutorial !!
Mine breaks in huge parts, idk why? I set it to 20000 and still no difference, huge chunks fall out unlike your video shows how it shreds into tiny microscopic pieces. But overall excellent tutorial. Liked and subscribed.
