How should you tackle wet and windy weather?
Firstly you need to get out and accept that you will get damp and windswept but after that you can focus on the positives and there are plenty of them.
In this video I battle the elements and use the humble Holga, playing to its strengths and using a fast B&W film to show the day as it felt to me. Once you overcome your initial reluctance to venture out of the car and accept you will be soaked it’s all up from that point on!

I know of such beauty topographically and on an intimate level – The climatic moods that stir and stimulate nasal scents recognised and memorised – The mosses & lichen rubbed between ones hands – The variants of colour in bog & marsh waters and the vegetation they support. The air cold – heady dense and damp with light so diffused that one's sensibilities can not fail to register as key component in setting the mood of the day – I know of all these sensualities because I'm Welshman – Distant from a land that bore me but never ever forgotten !
Great photos Steve, I didn't think that the Holga was waterproof mind…… 🙂
Your favorite little photo was beautiful and full of atmosphere. What you do reminds me what photography used to be and what it’s all about. We are forgetting this with the digital cameras and photoshop processes and the eternal pursuit of sharpness. Frankly I would not go back into a darkroom, but I really admire your conviction to work with film and produce these amazing results.
Top class images Steve👌
Do like a bit grain! The softness and grain have made some cracking photos Steve.
Cheers

I feel inspired by your images, the mood they invoke. It is something I would like to achieve myself, but with the camera I have. Thanks for sharing.
Outstanding pics!!! Really enjoy your videos.
I love the mood in the pictures- Excellenttt work -Love your videos – Same weather here at the Northwest coast of Norway
Very nice Steve. I enjoy seeing you use the little Holga.
Another great outing in perfect photographic conditions. I think there are at least 4 people who would melt in the rain? Maybe their digital cameras are not weather sealed 😉
Thank you Steve. I am predominantly a portrait photographer but am actively trying to do better at landscapes and urban landscapes. So many of your peers here on Youtube never shoot with anything but their very best gear and many will not venture out on days like yours was. I love that you will shoot your pinhole cameras, your Holga, and go out in less than optimal conditions to try to make what could be another rather mundane landscape into a work of art that brings forth our emotions and imagination. Your darkroom print is beautiful and really illustrates the melancholy nature of that place especially in those conditions. Thank you for continually inspiring me.
Steve, another super video. Thanks for taking us along on your trip.
Hello Steve! Outstanding pictures as always! Will you upload them to flickr? Looks like you haven't been doing that for some time now.
A really enjoyable watch Steve and you put us all to shame with your early mornings:). Some great photographs from a excellent photographer and thank you for you letting us all join you on your shoot. One of the best on YouTube.
Steve, it’s refreshing to see a youtube photographer talking about taking photographs and not viruses, or philosophy. By the way, Crosby beach Is my home beach. I’m useless at seascapes. If ever you go there to do Anthony Gormley’s “Another Place” let me know, would love to follow you around. The beers will be on me in the Volunteers Canteen.
Another good looking video, Steve. Of all the photographer Youtubers I watch you seem to be the only one, who, like me, likes the warmth of sepia. As far as just leaving the house, I thought about it but authorities here in Portugal are advising against any travelling that is not absolutely necessary. So I stayed home going a bit stir crazy and watching way too much Youtube. Stay safe.
That weather, reminds me what it was like 90% of the 21 years I lived in North Wales!
Another great video mate – Love how you are in no rush. Just take your time, relax, and enjoy what you are doing. You really bring back the enthusiasm of what being in the outdoors with a camera should be about.
Cheers
Jim
Thank you for a great episode! We forget (perhaps many don't know) how film choices can alter photos so much. These photos have just such an amazing feel to them!
Your favorite shot is my favorite too! Now I don't need to search for the time reading of the video … 😉
I'm a sucker for capturing early morning fog and mist. That means racing back to the house and heading back out before the sun has a chance to burn it all away.
Yet another masterclass. You chose just the right camera for the day and came back with some works of art. I think you are an artist as well as a photographic genius! Thanks for braving the elements yet again for our benefit.
That was my favorite image as well.
I’m not entirely sure I agree with the choice of Holga but the sentiment I agree with certainly. In my view life is too short and film too expensive to shoot with plastic cameras (save maybe for a ‘disposable’ at a party / when you might destroy it) but there is certainly a time and a place to just roll with a point-n-shoot and enjoy the results.
Your favorite shot in this video is mine as well. The second it popped up on screen, I said wow out loud!
Oh, I like that. Very, very Lovecraftian pictures shown. That slate mill is splendid, liked the first video from it, love this one!.
Some lovely images Steve. I particularly liked the last but one, the wide shot of the mill – very dramatic. Thanks for taking us on your adventures.
Another excellent video Steve. Really inspirational and I agree with the other comments that your work deserves much more recognition. Hopefully that will come in time. In the meantime, many thanks for all your hard work, I can’t wait for the next one!
Always inspiring.
3:30 Such a good reminder that Photography is/can be art and not just reproduction.
Man, some of those would make great book covers!
Outstanding images Steve. Great choice of camera and film for the weather conditions and I love the darkroom print of the slate mill. Keep dry Steve and thanks for the walk and video. Looking forward to more Delta 3200 images…
I live in a Rain Forest zone, if I do not go out and photograph during the bad weather, 80% of the year I will be indoors.
