In this tutorial I introduce layers and layer masks in Photoshop from the perspective of an absolute beginner. In it, I teach the very basics of Photoshop layers and layer masks.

In the video I mention another video I did which includes free practice files. You can watch that video and download those files here:

  2. I am sure this makes sense to everyone else here, but that seems so very confusing. Dodge and burn? everyone else uses black and white brush tool. So you dodge and burn on the same mask and end up with the same result??? This makes no sense. I feel like you might have chosen a better example.

  3. I like your detailed teaching style for us rookies. Good job. I'm paying monthly for Photoshop, I should probably learn to fully use it. Slowly but surely. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together, to share. Well done.

  4. I've always had a mental block when it comes to photoshop, but since I've become a real estate photographer this skill has become important and I've been struggling to truly "get" this concept for almost two years. I could follow specific instructions but really didn't know what I was doing. But now I understand. This is very clear instruction. THANKS!!

  5. I can't thank you enough!!! This is perfectly timed for me as I am finishing up LR training and have been using LR. Learning Photoshop is on my to do list to expand my capabilities. Your videos are so straight forward. I love your teaching style!

  6. Once again an excellently demonstrated technique, which goes a long way to demystify Layers. The penny has finally dropped with 'White reveals/Black conceals' aide. Keep up the good work. Cheers:)

  7. Just watched your 2017 video last night. It would be awesome if you could do a little backing up and explain how the import system works also how to save and export it definitely isn't as simple as LR.

  8. Hi Anthony,
I use Lightroom and am trying to learn Photoshop. In this Layers video, I am either confused or caught something. At around 2:32 you mention adding a mask to Layer 0 yet on your screen it shows it added to Layer 1. Am I missing something? Also, I have a request if a Photoshop tutorial is geared for new users. Is it possible to stick to the tools on the screen without mentioning the keyboard shortcuts? It forces you to try to remember something not on the screen. It could be me and that's OK but just a suggestion…Thanks, your videos are very helpful…

  9. I use Lightroom for over 10 years,i am an expert on everything about it,from preferences to develop, from print to library and every little corner of that programm. If you leave me with only PS…..oh god…what a nightmare for me,i don’t even know how to export the photo,i don’t know why it changes sizes and names to my files,i don’t know nothing nothing at all. I whish i had start with it at first but now from LR to PS it looks like a mountain to me,and believe me i love mountains.I try so many times to love it,to learn masks or curves or the other thing how they say it…content fill… something.
Nope,my mind don’t want it,it just understands everything and rejects it next minute.Sooo many icons, sooo small icons,so ooold icons, looks like my only hope, and that is what every time i suggest to Adobe,is make LR more independent and powerfull. Anthony another great video, even though i lost you on the white black grey mask! Greetings from Greece to all

  10. Hi Anthony. Great to see you doing what comes naturally. I’m really struggling with Photoshop. I’ve made the decision to have a break from Lightroom to learn Photoshop. Darn difficult to say the least but I have to learn. Thank you for everything you teach, your attitude and skills are exceptionally good. Stay safe Anthony. Thank you. Neville.

  11. As a long time fan of your videos (since lightroom) I like to say thank you so much for this as I was starting learn photoshop. It was very clearly explain the very basics of photoshops.
