How to cast and see shadows from transparent alpha images/ photos, this tutorial will show you the correct settings to achieve correct shadows cast by Alpha images so that only the image’s shadow is shown. This is not for cycles only blender internal render engine.

It's a shame you got to jump through so many hoops to get something to work like this. I figure the entire point of using an alpha 99% of the time is so that it doesn't really exist so why is the default option to cast a shadow on a non existent object? Then make the default texture for everything else to not receive it… just boggles my mind.
