Blender Tutorial Using Curves to Make a Batman Logo (Bezier Curves for 2D and 3D Vector Shapes)

Blender version used 2.67, download the file traced in the tutorial and the finished Blender file from my website —

This tutorial shows how to make a Batman logo using Bezier curves. Bezier curves are fundamental to vector graphics and Blender supports their use to create 2D and 3D shapes.

The Batman logo is created by tracing an existing logo but once created it is very easy to modify to make a new variation.

The tutorial shows how to make the logo into a 3D shape and into a 2D bitmap image.

The tutorial also has a quick look at the new Freestyle system that is designed for creating 2D drawings from 3D models but can be used with a 2D logo to take advantage of stylized lines; illustrating that Blender has the capability to create 2D vector graphics (and with the timeline, 2D vector animations).

  1. My bevel is flipped the wrong way around (with the opening of the C shape facing the outside instead of the inside) and when I select 2D it does not fill. I state both of these because I feel they may be related, but ultimately my end goal is just to fill the shape. Any advice?

  2. on macbook, i lose my bat every time i zoom with the trackpad (maybe i just shouldn't do this but i can't help myself). i can't get it back even after redoing the perspective-top. what gives?

  3. blender is cool. But tracing using curve is pain in the a*s. Seriously this is to slow. I don't understand why this method is not being upgraded. If you look at any other app, look how fast you can trace image using the curve.

  4. Thanks my friend, this is a good tutorial, exactly the right speed, show us the menu items, panel buttons and shortkeys step by step, not "hupdidupthereisit" shit pressing 20 keys a second like playing a Steve Morse Guitar Solo!

  5. I liked the video. Was snapping the points to the gridline an optimization in building the Batman logo or should I be trying to keep my control points on gridlines in the general case?  I'll check out your other videos in case you mention it elsewhere. Thanks again.

  6. Dang, I have been through a few tutorials on this subject, and all of them assumed I knew the first thing about Blender, but failed to point out that prior knowledge was needed.  Needless to say, I wasted valuable time with them and learned absolutely nothing.  Hell some of them even point to functions no where to be found, so I can only assume that they left out one or more steps…

Your style of teaching must be commended, and I thank you!  I am a very smart person, but still, when treading in unfamiliar territory trying to get through a tutorial that starts in the middle of nowhere is impossible, and most tutorial authors should follow your lead.

Because of this tutorial I not only received insight on exactly what I was trying to accomplish, but because you took your time, and showed the menus… It explained some other stuff I also had questions about, as well as pointed me to other stuff to explore

This tutorial is brilliant in it's simplicity!
