I have seen this on Phlearn, but my photoshop does not seem to go through the steps properly so it does not work for me.

Can anyone help? I followed his steps with a green background, white long hair dog, but when I get to the end, the dog is checkered, not the background. I can't see where I missed something.

This is exactly what I needed. I work with a lot of stock photos like this and was having a difficult time getting the perfect masking on hair. And ignore the negative comments below. You showing how to use channels for masking just gives the designer another tool to use to achieve that perfect selection. Thanks for the tip!

Somebody should do a tutorial on something more challenging: like cutting out a wispy hair from a background that is grungy or cluttered.

Yeah that isn't working for me. I get to the part where I am brushing over the edge of the hair, but it is just painting dark shadows on the background around the hair……

THANK YOU! Seriously, thank you! Ive been trying to use the refine edge tool but it never works for me. Even against an all opposite color background. I always had fragments left over that i had to cut out. This here…one shot and bam perfect hair! Thank you so much!

Unless you are only ever doing a black woman on a white background this really doesn't work…. most people i know are working from pictures with a real life background with hair that is lit from light to dark …. blondes are especially difficult

This is a really good tutorial for certain masking scenarios. It really helped us out a lot. However, we tried to follow along with an image where the subject had some light strands of hair running along the cheek areas. For us, the clone tool was not effective in creating a realistic result. Although that could also be a matter of skillo level. That said, we really learned some great new to practice. Great Job!!!
