Try using semolina with colours next time,it won't create much mess(like you said) and it is free flowing ! I'm an Indian and we use this trick often.Good luck ! – An admirer of your art 🙂

Grain dust especially flour is highly explosive.
Google it and plan your safety before trying this.. Never do this with hot lights.

haha… Holi is a festival in India where we play with these colours. Think of the tomatina festival but with Holi powder of different colours and water. That and flour … and finally accessories we have in abundance in India. haha
