How to Change ANY Color in Your Photo Using Photoshop | Take & Make Great Photography w/ Gavin Hoey

There are lots of reasons why you might need to radically change the color of something in your photos. You might be taking product photos of items in colors that are coming soon, perhaps two very different colors need to match in one image or you simply want to color swap for creative and artistic reasons.

Before you dive into Photoshop, photographer Gavin Hoey has some advice about getting your lighting right in the camera for easier and more realistic color swapping in post-processing.

Starting with a model in a blue dress, Gavin lights, photographs, and then swaps out the blue of the dress for a more muted purple using Lightroom Classic or Photoshop Camera RAW. He then goes on to add a subtle texture to complete the look.

Color swapping a red chair is a lot harder. As Gavin explains, anything that is a similar color range as your subject’s skin requires a more refined approach. So after the photo session, Gavin moves into Photoshop and uses three adjustment layers to transform the red chair into a green chair which blends in beautifully with the blue background to make a stunning fine art portrait.
