Long before we had high-speed sync (HSS) flash there were neutral density (ND) filters which achieved the same results but in a very different way. If your goal is to shoot shallow depth of field portraits on location during the day, then photographer Gavin Hoey has all the information you need to choose which technique will work best for you.
Gavin takes the same set of photos at the same location, twice. First-off he shoots with a 3 stop ND filter (and a 5 stop ND filter) to control the ambient light and keep it within in the flash sync speed limit of his Olympus camera. Then Gavin repeats the shoot using HSS flash and fast shutter speed. After the shoot, Gavin compares both sets of images and reviews his experience shooting old school ND against working with high tech HSS.

Gavin, it would be a good idea to tell us what ND stands for –BAK
Thank you sir for this video
Dear Mr. Hoey, I have a question regarding the modifiers that you are using for outdoor portraits. In this video, you are using a softbox but in your video: Better Than Ambient Light …, you are using a different modifier. May I ask you, how you decide what modifier you will use for an outdoor portrait? Many thanks
❤️❤️❤️❤️
I mean does metering make any difference when you are all manual?
Great video, what metering were you using?
Great video
what about the option no ND no Flash, shoot RAW, and correct in post? Wouldn´t this lead to the same result?
I only have one question, its difficult focus the subject with 5 ND filter?
Great work. Informative video. Thanks!
Gavin tutorials are so helpful. Thanks Man!
is Sekonic 308s any good in this kind of shoot?
Got another alternative aside from HSS. Thank you Gavin and Adorama!
Good video. I find that this generation of photographers have very little knowledge of balancing lighting with artificial light outdoors. Personally, I have always used HSS or fill-flash with an ND filter when HSS was not available. Good stuff. 😉 Renee http://www.reneefarias.com
Great¡¡¡
Enjoyed this. Liked the section where you took photo using ttl setting and then pressed tcm button, which put in a manual setting for strobe strength. Do you have any other tutorials about the use of ttl and manual on the remote?
Helpful.. Thanks a lot!
nice video ! Thank you ! )))
Just found this great video
Amazing how lucky you can get when you apply years of experience, practice with a light meter, and actually know what you are doing. 🙂
Great video Gavin. I will like you to do one with basic equipment for the ones like me, that do not use TTl and have limited filters. Remember, we are not all gear chaser. Thank you.
4:05 … Not really a bad shot as is, drop them highlights, lower contrast a bit, a tiny tiny bit of saturation and it would make a nice light and airy natural lit photo. Awesome shots man! I'm not a filter type guy but you workin them suckers man. Love the videos ALL of them! FYI, that wasn't no luck, that's experience, sometimes we simply question ourselves but typically nail the shot lol. Love it that way. You simply know how to look with your eyes and can pretty much pinpoint where your settings go without no durn light meter.
Just wondering, because the flash is pulsating in HSS, This is more taxing (wear and tear)on the flash VS using an ND filter?
Great video and the timing is perfect as I'm currently learning this. For HSS would the Godox V1 be underpowered at F1.8?
Great, simple, and easy to understand explanation
Good job Gav, good to be out and about i bet.:)
Your video was so go. I never had the thought of using ND filters with flash. Thanks I have more knowledge now. Keep it up.
Dear Master, Gaining shallow depth of field in portrait photography is ideal, but since you do not get sharp images at the widest aperture of the lens, why did not you use one or one third of the narrower aperture step? Thank you for answering.
Thank you very much for teaching.
Thanks! Learned a bit more…
That bokeh is stunning. Such lovely rendering
Perfect timing. Just used a variable ND filter for the first time to take sunset portraits at a sunflower field using off camera flash. Was pleasantly surprised 🙏
I really enjoy your videos. They are easy to follow and understand. I tend to want to watch your's much more than other Adorama videos. (no offense to the others but it's true) Thanks for what you do.
Anybody here into iphonograghy like myself?
Thanks for the comparison between the two methods. Haven't done much work with filters, so this was nice.
What time of day was it? Looks like high noon. Wouldn’t “golden hours” have better? Easier?
Thank you for this trial
What about recycling flash times between shoots for these two methods ?
Nice Job on N.D. filters vs controlled flash. Ed Ortman
You are a true wizard… 🙂
How do you lock the flash TTL settings with a Nikon?
Can it be done on a speedlight?
the was a great video with a method to try out myself
I would have written your title "HSS Flash with ND Filter".
