In this first video to my series of Flash Photography, I discuss the difference of using your pop-up flash vs. using an external mounted flash. Anyone who has just purchased an external flash or looking to purchase and external flash MUST watch this video. As the weeks progress we will move into more advanced flash photography. If you haven’t already, make sure you watch my “Photography for Beginners” series. Please leave your comments, questions or suggestions in the comments section below…THANK YOU!

not having an expensive setup I got the best result using the pop-up at 1/32 power and positioning the external off to the side pointed at the ceiling. maybe will change after I play with it a bit more.
very helpful. thank you.
too bad i dnt understand any explanation of using flash and detail of flash mode here
You talk too much man, just get down to business , stop extra talk.
This is is my first video of yours that I've viewed. You have a great way of explaining things clearly with your examples. Thanks.
Thanks, quick & easy to understand 🙂

Can a off camera flash be set up on slave mode, mounted onto a camera like a t5i, and fire without the on camera flash going off?
Great video but I'm trying to learn how to use it not what it is. I already know what it is but thanks anyway..

Thanks 🙂
Dude. You rock.
Was just getting into your Flash Photography introduction – and then I couldn't find episode 3. Did you make one?
Thank you so much! This video is very helpful!!
But I must say I was very distracted by the reflection in your glasses, it just kept bothering me. I'm just telling you so you can keep it in mind 🙂
I just got a canon speedlite 430ex ii and have no idea how to use it. I just found out how I'm going to get familiar with it. Thanks mate.. off to watch more of your videos. Cheers!
Its hard to take a guy seriously that is trying to teach about light, when he has a huge glare on his glasses the entire video….
I got a 7D and the small flash is pretty bad! Its too harsh. Then you end up with shakey photos because of a very low shutter speed. In extreme situations, even using a piece of tissue helps to soften things up!
subscribed 🙂
I have a 430ex and I love it, although sometimes I debate switching to a 580ex as I feel that sometimes I need that little extra.
I found that the college programs didn't really help that much. It was once I mentored with a pro and just watched videos, read books and TINKERED around with the cameras, lenses, flashes, reflectors that you really figure out how it works. In school I could never figure out shutter speed, when working with a pro, I not only understood it but learned how to work with it successfully.
The only 2 use I found for pop up flash are for emergency fill flash during daylight and wireless trigger when I don't have my radio trigger
How's your flash photography coming along?
No, definitely not frowned upon; it just depends on the situation you're in which would dictate the use of ETTL; ergo, events, wedding, etc.
Oh man, that sucks! Happy to help out-thanks for watching!
my college cut the photography program so iv decided to make you my professor thanks man this vide was awesome i learned tons
Never liked flash photography, didn't think I needed it… Bought a 430x II… I'm now in Love with it. Amazing what you can do with flash, it will raise your photography to a whole new level. You'll also learn a lot how light works, especially when you put the flash other angles and not only on your camera. LOVE IT!
I like this video tips
Love this video, very educational.
A 430ex flash is sufficient enough. However, if budget is a big factor, then I would suggest a YongNuo 565ex.
That's the point. I enjoy my vintage work station; makes me feel a little more relaxed and at home while editing.
If you shooting outdoors, then that would be the ideal time to use your flash as a fill light – especially if you're shooting against the sun. If you're shooting indoors, then you'll want to make note of the ceiling colors and height so you'll now where the best areas are to bounce light. Bouncing light indoors kreates very even lighting on your subject(s) instead of harsh directional light you seen when pointing the flash directly at your subject(s).
No, not necessarily. This would depend on what lighting affect your trying to accomplish. If you set your flash to full auto mode (ETTL), then your flash head will zoom in automatically to match the focal length of your lens.
