There was a subscriber question which I’m happy to answer, because it’s a question many of us have: How do we make the harsh shadow of a parallel light soft? The parallel light in Maya is called Directional Light, because only the direction, not the position matters.
For a tutorial about the contrary, creating razorsharp shadows for an Arnold Area Light, check this out: https://youtu.be/xgAz1EQe7VU
And for a Spotlight with soft shadows: https://youtu.be/cukezSVBWrM
Music: “Computer Animation” and “Dubius 170”, both composed by me and licensed via GEMA.

This tutorial starts with a song , but only few seconds long x)
Great tutorial! Any experience in rendering glass in Arnold, where the shadow would mix between soft and light soft shadows? I can send you an example if so? 🙂
I really enjoy your straight forward explanation. I'm knew to maya. I've tried to find a great walk cycle tutorial, and it is never very quite linear. So many back and forth that I get lost in the process of learning. Do you think you could make a great one ? That you be so great. Anyway, thank you for sharing your knowledge. It is mostly appreciated.
I love the little intro song.
I don't seem to have the Arnold viewport editor as an option, even though I have Arnold installed and loaded. Love your tuts!
