Mistakes Beginner Photographers Make Regarding Lenses

Perhaps no piece of equipment has a bigger impact on your photos than your lens. There are some common misconceptions about lenses, however, and as expensive as they are, it is important to make sure you know everything you can about them. This helpful video tutorial discusses some common mistakes photographers make when thinking about lenses.

Coming to you from Robin Wong, this great video discusses some common misconceptions about lenses. By far, the most common I see is only using wide angle lenses for landscape work. Without a doubt, a wide angle lens is appropriate for landscape photos, as such scenes are often quite grand and take a wide angle of view to capture in one frame. However, that is not the only way to photograph such scenes. A telephoto lens can be a fantastic way to simplify an overly busy composition, to leverage compression to bring elements closer together to create drama, or to single out a single part of the scene to create a more abstract image. This can be an effective way of creating more unique photos that stand out from the norm. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Wong.
