Blender 2.8 is quickly approaching an official release and the hype is real. Despite being only in alpha stage, 2.8 is currently very useable. If you haven’t tried 2.8 yet, I want you to use this tutorial as a means to dive in!
Though the real meat and potatoes is the modeling workflow for this shield, which is relevant to any version of Blender you use. Here you’ll learn about modeling the shield and it’s decorative details on a flat plane first, then deforming a lattice into the final curved shape. Have fun!

  2. Awesome tutorial. I'm a beginner in Blender and this tutorial got me familiar with modeling tools and hotkeys very quick. Very nice you speak and say your hotkeys.. Many tutorials just have key presses showing on the bottom left.. How the heck do those tutors even expect us to follow and learn with that xD

  3. I hate it when a tutorial is called "beginner" but the major content feels completely rushed. Take your time and explain each short individually and rather take your time to do something 100% right before you mess up and redo something 2-times. No offense, just saying because it's very frustrating and disencouraging for beginners (:

  4. Remove doubles has changed to merge by distance." Under the vertex bar, select merge. It will collapse into a sub menu, from there select distance. you can also do this by going under the mesh tab, hit clean up tab and merge by distance.

  5. I watched to lattice portion of the video at least 15 times trying to apply it to my model and it will not bend at all. I even did it exactly as you did just to see if I was not applying it right and it still won't cooperate. ANy ideas on why that might be because I'm about to quit.

  6. awesome video!! could you please explain what you meant by 'to clean the corner' in 10:03 ? i want to know how to model cleanly. also why do you 'simple deform' the lattice and then use a lattice modifier instead of directly simple deforming the shield?

  7. Great video and aswesome results you got there. I like how you talk about the way you use the shortkeys (or how Blender changed such features).

    Since I'm very new in Blender, I want ask:

    7:398:00 Did you extrude and scale for generate a new face, later moving the edge – hence creating the inner border of the shield?, I mean, the same result could be done with "extrude vertex normals"?
    8:33 The "shading" metal can be added to Blender 2.79b?
    31:45 – What does "Cavity" options do?

  8. No idea why, but I keep having trouble with beveling and tapering the bezier curve. Either it moves away and goes behind a shield when I change tilt or it is separated from the shield (floating a bit in front) even though the line (bezier) is stuck to the surface of my shield. Like it's rotating around the curve instead of rotating right on top of it. Also, tapering not working as well no matter how much attention I pay to what you do (Probably still missing something that I cannot see)
