    AFAIK the join creates a cartesian product (that is each row of the left is "joined" with every row of the right). The ON <column> clause then eliminates all the rows where the <column> don't have same values. ON makes it linear

    INNER JOIN is a cartesian product ON is the thing which make it linear.
