This is not a new technique. I recall using double exposure shooting with 4×5 film in the early '90s. The technique is the same, the tools are different.

doesn't really look that much better. the overexposed one looks just fine as is in this case
were the under and over exposed pictures taken on purpose to create the blending effect?

The curtain still has some small problems (left bottom corner). I would select the corner with a lasso and brighten it a little bit up….

seems to me luminance masks might do a better job with this and not compromise the fidelity of the image rather than simple masking.
