Hi everyone! I was looking at some old After Effects work that I did, and came across a photo that I had added “3D” text onto with a fake shadow. I decided to recreate the effect in Blender with cycles, and decided to create a quick tutorial!
In this quick tip, we’ll go over how to break apart your scene into separate render layers so that we can properly composite the shadow pass onto the 2D image. We’ll also go over using the “Box Mask” node to mask out areas of a render that we want to remove. In the end we’ll composite the shadow pass, and then the 3D text onto the 2D image.

hi do u have blender tutorial 2.79 ? can u make some effects with it?
why my blender not show the film property? so what I do sir?
box mask?! hell no. It's time for a new shadowpass tut for youtube
box mask… wtf bro.
how can i tick the transparent box (by film in the render menu) with an Backround image (HDR) ?
i have the Problem, that when i tick the transparent, the backround gets too transparent (there should be that hdr 😀 )
Is this possible in Blender Render??
I've automated this now – grab the plugin at http://blenderartists.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=435103&d=1462197913
Good tutorial but something seems to have changed between 2.67 and 2.75. Everything broke down after the mix node was added. When I plugged in the image node to the mix node and set it to multiply everything went black and nothing else worked after that.
How do I save my image after the composite?
At 12.50 when you do the boxmask thing that only works for an image with black on top? I have black on both sides and on top so how do I fix that??
If anybody want to know how to add shadow on HDRI in real time, watch my tutorial !
thx
Mil mil gracias, me ayudó muchísimo su tutorial, de verdad, andaba buscando como hacer esto y por fin lo encuentro, no lo encontré en español pero su tutorial se entiende a la perfección, muchas gracias, Thank You Very Much =D
how can you edit an obj fill in blender ? very frustrating:(
YES! THANK YOU! I've been looking all over for this!
Thank you I appreciate the quality.
If you don't see nothing in the shadow pass, it's because you don't use a Blender lamp. I had the problem…
Thanks for this great tutorial.
BTW I am using the latest version (2.76) so it works fine!
Hello BLENDER TUTOR,
I tried to stretch/Aspect the ratio of camera, but the whole rendered image is stretched.
What could i do please?
thanks !
Nice dude
Me sirvió! Gracias Amigo!
Next time, Pls just focus on the topic you metion in the video title. Making it less lengthy gives comfort
Thank you
I think rather than using a box mask, it would be better to use Subtract to remove the bg from the shadow
note: these shadows will not work with a Cycles Light Plane…
Don't as me Y
You're a life saver. Thank you so much 🙂
Дело в том, что не получается сделать именно так, как показано в уроке. Будем разбираться…
I think that you have some older version of blender because I didn't succeed very well. I totally failed whit my pic 🙁
Thank you! Not only will I be using this for cool little projects of my own, but I'm going to use this technique to make an advertisement for my mom's store 😀
hi, thanks but the video resolution is very low for see the details.
Nice video. My shadow didn't appear though, what would be causing this?
I dont have that surface section under world button were you add the environment
How would you get your lighted text, like a neon sign cast onto the backround picture. I got my text to light up by going to the global setting and turning on indirect lighting and the approximate tab. but i cant get the back lighting to show on the picture any suggestion?
Yes…make a 3D tracking Tut. Let me know when its up! Your tutorials are great, I've been transitioning from 3DS Max…so far I'm liking Blender as much as I do 3DS Max. Also'd like to request a tutorial to import blender models into Flash Pro CS5 + if you are able. Thanks
thank you so much
that is awesome, thank you very much,I'd like to see your tutorial about camera tracking.
while i love that your making tutorials… you are getting caught up on the same problem every youtube teacher does…. all that other stuff, such as the 3d text, the viewport resolution, and the background image, deserve their own video… i want ONLY to know how to make a transparent material receive shadows…
Are you still going to make a video tracking tutorial? That would be rad 🙂 Thanks
Yes i would like you to do a 3D track for this project
It's different in Blender Internal. You just add a quick material there and it's done. Cycles is harder because it's still in development.
Blender is free though
Yes, and in Blender you can 3D track* a video or an object and after it's done you have an option to create a tracking scene – this handles all the node setup for you, and you can render immediately after however this works for blender internal and not cycles (not yet anyway). Cycles is relatively new and still heavily developed rendering engine – it's a raytracing engine which supports both CPU and GPU (CUDA) rendering* much like luxrender.
*i'd like to see these functions in max
idk man in blender if u just click setup tracking scene..u get shadows n everything in 1 sec lol
My goodness. Compared to how 3dsmax handles this, this workflow is downright horrifying. In max you apply the matte/shadow-material – all done!
why when i combine them all following your node setup it only shows the text when i mix them im on Blender internal ?
Sorry, not my video. I'm just a commenter on the video. But yes, you are right. Tim Ward has a good one on doing just that. Thanks.
