* 3 Essential Tips for Creating Any Material in Blender* –

Hello Artists, this Specular map blender tutorial demonstrates how to use specular map in blender.
In this blender cycles tutorial, you will learn how to create specular map in photoshop and then we will see how to use specular map in blender.
We are going to use Cycles rendering engine for this tutorial.

This specular map blender tutorial demonstrates first what is a specular map/reflection map. A quick simple presentation on specular maps, so you will get the idea before watching the actual tutorial on specular map.

Then, we are going to see how to create specular map in photoshop.
By using the photoshop, you will get the idea of how to make specular map from diffuse texture. The specular maps can be manually created using brushes. But for this basic tutorial, we will only see how to convert a diffuse image into specular map.

After that, we are going to see How to use specular map in blender(Using cycles).
We are going to make a bump map setup first, and then i will show you the node setup for the specular map.
The node setup is simple, it just looks like a big network.
I will then show you how to control the amount of specularity/glossiness/shininess after setting up nodde setup for specular map.

After watching all steps in this Specular map blender tutorial, you will have a proper knowledge of using specular maps, and how to use them inside any application.

In the end, we will look at some very important tips about using specular maps.
Hope this specular map tutorial helps you so you can apply same techniques in your work and create something cool.

keep creating : )

Good tutorial, but please give us a break with the unnerving, circus like music – it is even awful when turned down low.

This is a great tutorial…it's too bad it's not voiced. It's 2018…I'll look elsewhere.

I must be doing something wrong here, it worked earlier but my blender crashed on me and upon doing it again, it's not showing up in render view

There are some mistakes in the material.
1: use a fresnel node (input/fresnel), connect the bump node to the normal input of the fresnel node and connect the fresnel output to the factor input of the mix shader. (Thats because you see much less reflection from a 90° angle than from a 20° angle. example: the surface of water. 90° you see through it, 20° you cant see trough it and reflects the sky)

2: connect the specular texture to the roughness input of the glossy shader (pure black= 100% reflection, pure white= 0% reflection).
You have to adjust the specular map because nearly everything has specularity (except vantablack) so you don't want pure white in your specular map and you only want pure black when there is water or a mirror on the surface. (nice to fake waterpuddles)

    3. Delete the mix rgb node for the specular controlling. You don't need it.

Nice informative tutorial. I would suggest not using white writing on a white background though, it was difficult to read, especially when you were creating the map in Photoshop.
