Want to follow along? Grab the tutorial files here: https://www.surfacedstudio.com/downloads/tutorial-files/texture-mapping-in-blender-for-absolute-beginners
In this Blender tutorial I will show you how to define UV layouts for your 3D models so that you can apply image textures to them.
We will quickly cover the basics of how Blender maps your textures to your 3D models and then talk about UV projection and UV unwrapping.
Then, we will unwrap a 3D Minecraft and apply a proper texture to it to make it look awesome!

cool but should've been villager bcuz creepers are not pg enough 😉
Super helpfull, and you explain stuff in such a cool and intersting way! 🙂
I was here because I want to learn to make a smoothie .wait this is the wrong blender…
Could you show us how to texture a cube to have a different image file on each face, and to rotate uvs on each face to align the images?
to complicated
and when ever I use the cube projection tool it enlarges it, is it because my model is bigger than yours?
for some reason when I created my own creeper the the texture for the head is really small and isn't in many or multiple parts do you know why? did I miss something
I saved a free Batman model from CGTrader which looks amazing, I downloaded the Obj file and imported to blender.
https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-models/character/man/lego-batman-d56fdab4-2b8b-4aeb-9c97-a3e98b259a14
The model comes as twelve separate pieces, when I group select (using 'B'), the whole thing is surrounded by a blue bounding line. In edit mode, the left leg is highlighted as a wire mesh and the rest of the model is still surrounded by a blue line. This is where the tutorial stalled for me. (because of my own inexperience).
My question is this if I may, do I need to select each separate piece of the model and apply the techniques of your tutorial, or is there a way to select all objects and have a yellow line bounding them as a group. Your creeper seems to be made of six objects but is using one single image to wrap around the entire model. I assume some textures came with the object file (I haven't seen the chest image or the animated face image, or any material textures for the cape etc, but assume they will present themselves xD).
Anyway, any help you could offer would be very much appreciated good Sir. Thank you very much for the tutorial.
Im usually impatient with Blender tutorials but somehow I watched this entire video! I guess because like every second of it had a different technique or taught something important. Thx for the detailed tut!
Thank, you for this introduction. Many steps good explained
Blenders number one issue is its nasty a$$ UI. I have been in the 3d game since the 90's, Maya,3D Studio, AutoShade etc. Blender said, screw the ui formula, just put #$%% anywhere… Then, make them use a shortcut instead… Think about it, all the Applications with the worse UI all but when away, AutoShade,Bryce,Poser… This is blenders problem. And I know its free, don't care.
Thank you so much 🙂
your videos are really helpful
I can't find UV tab in the tool shelf when I press tab. Does anyone know why?
Another happy customer : )
My computer doesnt have the f12 option what do i do?
very useful, thank you. now i have to do the same thing for B2.8 which is just into beta today! i shall now go and look to see whether you also have some more advanced UV mapping tutorials along with material assignment, etc.
These are great tutorials. Clear and straight to the point. As a developer who sometimes has to create placeholder models until an artist is available, I find Blender very powerful but not at all intuitive. Your tutorials have really helped.
Now if I could just grab that tiny widget to get to the split screen.
Great video! Thank you
Someday, we will just talk to the computer like in Star Trek and say "Computer, I want to add a texture to this model". It will say "Working, rendering, complete" and you just look at it. But what happens when it says "I am tired, and my transistors are too hot. I need to turn off for a while". Then we need to learn all the steps in Blender again.
Okay so I recently discovered this channel and
I love your personality!
And the way you teach is quick but understandable
keep up your good work!
Thank you! This is exactly what I've been looking for.
This has been helpful but at 15:03 were you demonstrate how to place an image texture in the uv editor i have a problem were my computer has an error saying that it cannot read the png and that there's no such file or directory. Can some one help me with this?
I managed to figure out UV texture mapping in Blender thanks to your video but I think 3DS Max's interface is more intuitive.
Excellent tutorial, you should do one on a much bigger object.
So many steps. Blender needs to make things easier to draw in a bigger crowd.
Cool tutorial!
Vry very helpful. Thank you Tobias.
Really very good tutorial, explained very simply and slowly. Perfect for us noobs. Thanks.
i have a question. How do we make the textures transfer over with the .fbx file?
for me the 3rd tap is relations
Great vid, you should shave your head and grow beard tho… just a tip.
my render is coming out black, when I have it in textured view it looks ok, but in renderd view it is solid black
