Autodesk Maya 2013 Tutorial – Hair with transparency maps. I show you how to make hair using transparency maps. I will show you how to make a hair brush in photoshop and save the file with an alpha; then we will assign that material in maya to create the hair.

I followed the instructions but my hair brush is still dots. I use a surface pro 3 laptop which doubles as a tablet and comes with a pen. Even though I set the pen pressure in shape dynamics and transfer the brush is still dots.

i try to model this character where i am download that reference image
Thanks a lot! Couldn't be explained any simpler than this for beginners like me.. 🙂
the texture you create is low resolution, is there some kind of program that creates hi res textures to achieve something like final fantasy hair?
Sound suck but thanks.
You are a lifesaver man, appreciate it. subscribed
thank u so much …. subscribed 🙂
Thanks bro you realy helped.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, Sir. This helped me a lot. I always had problems with doing hair, I'm really weak at it. Glad, I found this video =)
wow the sound is garbly annoying
Mind if I ask how to place vertexes using the "Create polygon tool" on top of the head? It just places the new vertexes on the ground plane which is bad. I read somewhere that I have to snap it but I tried all of the snap options and the vertexes get either placed inside the head or on the ground plane.
thanks !
how to rig these hairs with head?
why the hell dosnt my alpha show up? i did everything all i get is a transparent mesh where the whole thing becomes slightly see through thats all!!
this happens every time im going insane! UGHHHHH pls help
awesome tutorial ! thank`s a million 🙂

How would you do black hair?
I've finally decided to do things your way. Texture transparencies for everything!
brilliant tutorial
Yes, you can use transparency maps for eyelashes.
hi bro you are game designer or something like this /
?
Because Maya is usualy used for video games and game designer needs to know 3d apps !!!!
thanks man i really appreciate it. i pressed 6 after importing from poser in 3ds but still looks gray. imma play around with it a little bit and see. thanks again bro
you mean to see the textures? press 6.
how did you make that gray figure all collorful coz whenever i import from poser or daz they just look gray and i have know idea how to turn it back to the way it was. can somebody help me?
Okay thanks.
It depends on the studio, many use their own hair system. You can also use a combination. I am not an animator so I am not qualified to make videos on animation.
Is this the method they use for movies/cartoons to make hair or is it just games?
Also would you be willing to show how to animate the hair in your later tutorials? I know it's mainly just joints, but I would like to see your take on it.
Keep up the good work.
That REALLy helped me out man, it solved my problems, it works for hair for udk even thanks a LOT dude!!!!!!!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaweeeeeeeesommmeee!!!! really help me a lot!!! thanks!!
Stop bitchign and just be happy he took the time to help us out for free.
yes I agree. The character is not really meant to be a game character. I just modeled it real quick( and didn't care much about the poly count) just to have something to use for this tutorial. of course I absolutely wouldn't use it for a game or even film. as for the hair cards, yeah I used a lot in this video, but it was just to show how they would be used. I agree 11k is too much for hair cards alone so I wouldn't use that many in a game. thanks for pointing that out.
Much appreciation for an awesome Maya 2013 hair tutorial irvin390. Thanks much bud!:)
you can have an alpha map(transparency map) in the same body diffuse texture. Just make sure that in the alpha map everything is white for the body diffuse so that the body shows up or else it will be transparent.
I see that you place the UV map of the hair in the same area where you placed the previous UV map of the whole body, does that affect the hair uv map in any way?
it depends what it is that you're lighting. If you are lighting a character just to show it off, 3 point lighting is the best choice. If you are lighting a scene it will depend more on the mood you are trying to convey.
Do you have any lighting tips?
gw2 rocks
this is a bit late reply but make sure the hair for alpha is pure white while its background is pure black.
thanks for watching
Thank you so much for this tutorial! helped me alot 🙂
