Blender Modelling Tutorial Making A Cutlery Knife

This tutorial shows how to make a cutlery knife. It is part of a series of tutorials that build up to making a dining table scene.

In the tutorial a photo of a knife is traced out. The photo can be down loaded from my website although any photo of knife could be used, or you could make up a shape of your own.

The knife is really a combination of two models, the blade and the handle.

The method used for making both parts of the knife is to make a 2D shape and then extrude it. The method of making the 2D shape is ‘point by point’, that is, vertices are added one at a time.

Hiding parts of a model is a good way of altering one part of a model without changing the hidden part. The blade is hidden to work on the handle.

The steps are –

Set up a background image of the knife
In edit mode, delete the vertices of the cube
Make sure you are in vertex select mode
Add a vertex (Ctrl + left mouse button)
Press E (extrude) to add vertices, trace one side of the side of the blade
Be careful at the tip of the blade and down the other side, add vertices to make quad faces
Create edges between opposite vertices (F make edge/face) , make quad faces (select all, F)
Extrude the 2D shape to make a 3D blade and move it to centre it
Add a loop cut and slide to flatten the end where the blade meets the handle
Hide the blade to focus on making the handle

Add a vertex (Ctrl + left mouse button)
Press E (extrude) to add vertices, trace one side of handle
Duplicate the one side
Changing the pivot point, rotate the duplicate 180 degrees about the Z axis
Create edges between opposite vertices (F make edge/face) , make quad faces (select all, F)
Extrude the 2D shape to make a 3D handle and move it to centre it
Add a loop cut and slide to flatten the end where the handle meets the blade
Select the top face and scale it to taper the end of the handle
Unhide the rest of the model
Go into object mode
Change the shading to smooth

The image file and the finished model can be downloaded from my website –
