  1. Mmmh.. Isn't there a way of having collections AND the old layers layout?.. like the little cubes on the side or something?.
    I mean, don't get me wrong but I never really like the outliner that much and I think it's being overloaded for no reason at all when it might a better solution to find a middle point, maybe using the layers layout with some sort of simbology inside it's little cubes for meshes, lights, etc.

  2. Can I unhide only objects in one (current) collection? For example, in previous versions of Blender I can select only one layer (pressing 1, 2, …), then hide some objects (pressing H) and then unhide them (pressing alt+h), but it unhided only objects in CURRENT layer. I was very useful feature, because I can work with something on this layer and don't want to see anything from another layers. For example, there can be some helping stuff, backup version of model etc.

  3. My first impression is that I don't like this. But I'll wait for 2.8 is out before passing judgment. That being said I hope one object can be in several collections. The outliner looks really messy and relying completely on keyboard shortcuts is just traditional un-user friendly blender design imho. With layers in 2.7x I only need to remember one keyboard shortcut (m). Now I need to remember at least 5. It is very lacking visually. Hopefully someone makes layers addon for 2.8. Or I really hope this is better than what it looks in this video.

  4. Hi Pablo ! Good work done by the team ! Will 2.8 system of collections be able to ANIMATE VISIBILITY of collections or items in collections like "old" command: "Create layer key" that was very useful to optimize memory, rendering only the desired items in time ? Is it planned ?
    Cause that would be GREATer than Great…

  5. Even though the new scene collection is good for managements, it needed to change the look!
    don't you guys see? It's not please to look at, especially people with poor eyesight. All I can see is just text text text!!
    Is there a better layout instead of just a list of text? At least give us better icons..

  6. I find the layers more comfortable as they are. The little squares quickly showed you which scene has objects in it. The need of pressing two keys to show that is a bad choice. I would recommend to keep those layers for the first 20 collections to keep an overview.
    Is it possible to change the opacity of a layer?

  7. Great progress, I like all the improvements so far! What I'm wondering when seeing all this if there will be also put some love into the exporters to support for example exporting collection instances as single meshes, I think something like this could be very useful when exporting for game engines for example.

  8. In blender 2. 79, I usually put all the lights of scene in layers 1 to 5. Now when working on a complex 3d Archviz scene in layer 1…. while texturing and applying material I put a particular object in other layer say 2 to analyse the model (under similar light conditions) this makes blender to be lesser resources hungry.
    Not sure how can that be done now in 2.8.

  9. I think you said in the render window we could have more than 8 slots (I myself have 20 but using my own modification of blender) but I can't find how to add more slots in 2.80.

  10. WHAT… Jaques Lucke is at blender institute !! ooooh boy things are going to be explosive :P. I smell a "Softimage ICE" like meal about to be cooked.
    Collection wise I was wondering when to see the control over objects options..nice, although it seems "restrict viewport selection" on object level isn't working (the cursor icon in the Outliner).

    I am going to say it again: please the Timeline needs to be brought back don't put the Dope sheet instead and call it Timeline, it doesn't work. Timeline is per selection editor not a scene editor. if you are animating a character and you want to animate the arm for example but the Timeline is showing you not only all the character's keys but every key in the scene your brain will fry before even starting, so please bring it back.

    Again I should salute the dev team for their tremendous efforts.

  11. Is there a way to set some object not visible for ever ? I use rigs with some mesh and curve tu manipulate it, but all this mehs shoudn't be visible at all. And when i presse alt+h, they become visible and ruins my workflow..

  12. I don't know. Somehow this doesn't look good to me. Is it practically faster than switching between layers? How about moving objects between layers?
    Maybe I'm just not professional enough, but I hardly ever actually use the outliner and it tends to just take up space. The layer selection widget thing was small, compact, and on the bottom toolbar.

  13. Jacques Lucke in a meeting?… That is a historic event. I can't wait to see what happens because of this. Every one of his ideas should be written into the soul of Blender. Also, I would love to see node based modeling, such as in the program called Antimony. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atdAcUTvt8g ….. I know Animation Nodes can have this functionality added to it because it already has 90% of it.

  14. Personally I liked the direction they were going were 1,2,3… changed modes. Perhaps the team will include a new keyboard shortcut preset for those don't mind change. It seemed to simplfy everything along with collections. I would have thought the community changed blender modes more than they would hide/reveal collections.

Would it be possible to have a way to have a "trash" collection where i can put for example non destructive element, because with your system it is only hide, but if i use alt+h it unhide everything, and every unused layer are visible… I use often alt+h and only work with one layer, and put many things in other layer (like particle parent, or non destructive element i create, and that might be usefull if i want to change something)

    Also, will there be a place in the interface to change layer directly without having to do alt+click in the dope sheet (for me, I find the dope sheet very cumbersome, I never use it) ?

  16. Well, that is really pleasant to see part of my proposal implemented!
    It is extremely useful!

    Obviously, it is kind a messy, because it have no complete support, because there are no limits at "layer system" blender has got (old layers are not "layer system" – it is visibility content mangament system, accidentally called as "layers"), but it is much better and useful, than switching modes with nums and is very appreciated.
    Because of – you know. Relevancy/Speed.

    Also there is entire systems usually builds around Layer systems in other software to support abscense of limits.

    Abscense of limits can be implemented through making "BASE Collection", that contents all collections, that are extends 20 limit – this will allow to use it as "sorting collection BASE", assigned at "0" key, so users can organize collections they need to organize, getting them from abyss, and filling other available 19 other layers.
    Like clip of ammunition and bucket with rounds.

    This will also allow to bring back 20 layers UI widget, where layer 0 will be special.

  17. With these collections, can you they save a different scene state? Working with multiple camera angles for Arch Viz, Each camera will have a different lighting setup so one might be daylight they other a twilight with artificial lights on. Does this type of scenario work with Collections?

    what about setting some collections as favorites to use like in 2.7, having a grid for your fav layers asigned to numbers?

  19. hi pablo, when can we expect to see working vertex paint in eevee, ive tried using them from the attributes node (just like in cycles) but it doesnt seem that im able to actually paint the vertex colours…

    although it does seem to lighten the shader when used with a multiply node into the principled base colour… so im guessing it works, but painting them isnt usable yet 🙁

  20. I think we need to be able to see what collection we're in from the info bar and maybe even be able to change it from. I usually work on 16:9 small screens or 4:3 ones, and I usually make Outliner super small when I'm not using it.

  21. NOOOOO! CODE QUEST SHOULD NEVER STOP AGAIN!! Common people put 10 bucks in the Blender Cloud and this will stay a part of our lives forever! Or the Team stops to eat and live so they don't need money anymore, but somehow it makes the impression on me that such an attempt would not work out that well long term. So option a is probably more worth pursuing! I mean ten bucks are 2 kepab a month (or one Game on steam sell that we will play like 5 min and then forget for the rest of our lives). And you get all the movie project stuff to tinker around with and such. COME ON! LET'S KEEP THIS ROLLING SOMEHOW! SO WE CAN HAVE NICE THINGS!
