Comedian Fools a Journalist Into Thinking He's a Fashion Photographer

The term “fake news” is something we’ve become all too familiar with over the past four years. Yet, despite everyone’s apparent awareness of the prevalence of half-truths, trolling, and outright lying, some folks still fall for them — even Emmy award-winning journalists, like the one in this video.

Australian stand-up comedian Lewis Spears has made a name for himself in his home country by trolling the media with fake news stories. In 2019, he traveled to Los Angeles’ popular Melrose Avenue in order to trick some unsuspecting aspiring models into posing for his latest character, famous fashion photographer, Clive Palmer. “Palmer”, a Vogue Australia photographer, shoots his subjects with what looks like a Canon Powershot. See? It’s not the gear; it’s the person behind the lens.

Before he and his production team pack up to leave, a crew from ABC News arrive to do a story. Using his disarmingly Australian accent and poker-faced boldness, Spears convinces Emmy award-winning journalist Lana Zak to pose for him. ABC News actually ran the lighthearted story in August 2019 without knowing they had been duped.

I’m not entirely convinced that this is as much of a damning indictment of the mainstream media as it is just a bit of fun by the Aussie prankster. The news segment seemed to be a playful thirty-second addition to the end of another story by an advantageous reporter.

What do our readers think? Is this just another example of the fake news media acting irresponsibly? Did they know it was fake, yet ran it anyway? I don’t know what to believe anymore.
