Off Camera Flash Photography Tutorial | Part 2

Code Canyon

Hi guys! Today’s video is part 2 of our off camera flash photography series! This week we are covering flash modifiers, where I place my light stands at a reception, and where I stand while photographing receptions using off camera flash.

If you missed last week’s video, be sure to check it out! https://youtu.be/WzJAcn74J9g

In last week’s video, I shared my off camera flash set up and some tips for getting started as a beginner with off camera flash. I mainly use off camera flash at wedding receptions when I can no longer use natural light.

It doesn't really make much of a difference, but I like softboxes better than umbrellas. I also don't shoot weddings. I tend to work in more of a studio environment. A large softbox can be comparable to a shoot through umbrella. It sort of ends up just being a matter of personal preference.

I want to use the flash off my camera. Will the remote on the flash set off my camera when I fire it at my model?

Hi joy I have just got triggers so I have Nikon sb700 and yn560iii I shoot wedding but only with flash on camera I want to use it off as well but don't want to experiment on somebodies wedding. What would be a good situation to mock up for practise no people. I hope I explained that and your not like what is she going on about.

I have a single flash and a soft box with trigger..so to balance light I usually set them in middle of the subject, is that ok? Or can you give me any suggestion for this! It may be a long until I buy another set of flash and soft box for me as I am still struggling to make money.

I'm a little confused with the zoom on the flash. One person gave me advice to always set it at 24. Do I want to change it depending on the focal length that I'm at with me lens or how do I decide this without taking too long?

Thank you SO much for this video! I've been checking out LOTS of off-camera flash videos and this is by far the best. I'll be doing a wedding this summer and the couple would like me to take some shots inside the church, thinking walking up the isle etc. I don't have any assistant and I'm doing all the shooting. Would it be sufficient to just use one flash with my camera with the bounce card or a small soft box/diffuser on the flash? I need to be running around quickly to change the view and to get them while their walking/exchanging rings etc. Thank you so much again! Chris 🙂

Are you bouncing the light off the inside of the umbrella back at the subject or are you shooting through the umbrella? Seems like you would be wasting a lot of light if you are bouncing but I just wanted you to clarify. Thanks.

    Hi! super helpful!

I do have one question. I have the same pocket wizards but when I have a flash on top of my camera on top of the Mini TT1 it will not fire from the off camera flash too. But when I don't have a flash on top, the off camera flash fires fine. Just curious if you had any knowledge on this or any ideas on what to do! Thank you!

When you shoot your YouTube videos, is it all natural light or you’re using some soft box? I started watching your videos and curious of your set up. Thanks.

Joy, I am a beginner to a Nikon D3300 off camera flash Photography, having only 1 Altura # AP-N1001 Speedlite flash for Nikon with Altura "Wire flash trigger / remote shutter release" for Nikon, I have watched your Videos, although you spoke mainly of a 2 flash set-up, I hope to start out doing mostly Family Portraits, and Senior Graduation Photography, both of these possibly "On Location". I have No Studio available. Any Positive suggestions from you will be very much appreciated

Thank you for your video. I'm just a retired man trying to have fun with camera. I have a nikon d610 and a youngnuo 568ex speedlight, most of the time I've used I-TTL mode, sometime in manual mode, the flash allways fired 2 pre-flash before the final flash and the camera took a picture, that good, but sometime I just want the flash fired 1 flash only, but I don't know how to get that( I've tried many time ). Any help? Thank you.

Hi Joy, Great videos. I'm curious…what camera body are you using? and are you choosing to use the external triggers with the SB-910's to go RF or does the Nikon you own not have a remote option?

If you have 2 off camera flash, and one on camera, where would you put the 2nd off camera flash in this scenario that you drew on the diagram with the band/dj stand? Do you ever use JUST flash with off camera (without modifiers like the umbrella? Or do you always use the umbrella?

Lovely overview, I have my first work in 2weeks, feel ill prepared but confident with on camera, just ocf experience I need now, I have used studio lighting but that feels easy compared to this because I think of the pressure to get it right first time. Keep up the content it's pleasing to see simple starter guides tbh.
