This summer I had the honor of getting a private photography lesson with John Free. John is one of the great living street photographers of our generation. Steeped in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and W. Eugene Smith, Free takes the precedent set by these fine photographers and applies it to the modern world.
This is my lesson with John Free.

My name is Ted Forbes and I make videos about photography. I’ve been making photographs most of my life and I have a tremendously deep passion for photography that I want to share with you on YouTube.
The Art of Photography is my channel and I produce photography videos to provide a 360 degree look into the world of making images. We all want to get better so lets do this together!
I make videos covering famous photographers, photography techniques, composition, the history of photography and much more.
I also have a strong community of photographers who watch the show and we frequently do social media challenges for photographers to submit their own work. I feature the best and most interesting on the show when we do these so come check it out and get involved!

Is it fair to say most known photographers just shoot Tri-x mainly?
Awesome, Ted! So far best video/movie about photography i ever seen 🙂
Good luck!
Mr.Free is a fairly interesting old fella.
Fantastic! Thank you Ted.
I watch this whenever I want to be motivated. It always motivates me.
I really love the artistic choice to have the video in black & white, Ted. It almost removes all of the visual distraction so we can actually focus on John's words and advice.
What does he mean by "easy shots?" Clearly, we see him standing on the beach and taking pictures of a guy in a wheel chair. Looks easy. But what is the difficult part? Once that is known then it can be pursued. It involves the meeting of the scene with something essential about yourself. I spent decades on Santa Monica beach and ran miles on it going underneath the cool, dark pier hinting of danger in its shadows. You have to look in those shadows to know yourself. You have to know what you're looking for in a scene. You're looking for yourself, really. You're looking at and into and through the shadows. Thus every picture turns out to be a self-portrait. It has to be. Anything else is an "easy shot."
Simply …………Brilliant.
Thank you.
Wow, what an exceptional man… I could listen to him talk about photography for days, so inspirational… make it difficult, easy ain't worth nothin'… words to live by I guess. Time to stop being a schmuck and be fearless more. Great video Ted, really enjoyed it
What an incredible man and talent. Thank you for bringing him to us.
This was fabulous, I'm so glad I saw this, I'm a newbie to photography and it has changed everything about how I thought I should take pictures. The key here is to slow it down, this is what I'm taking onboard. No more taking loads of shots with the hope I may get one good one. Its inspired me to acquire an old camera and shoot with film too. Thankyou!
Johnny Free rambling like a madman as usual.
"His style was excellence." yes! I love it
The music ruins it.
He's called John Free with good reason. What a guy. I'd never heard of him until 12 minutes ago, but I've already loved him for 11 minutes. Great stuff, thanks Ted! x
